Watching the Fire Catch

Carolyn Bell

Jean Paul Sarte once said “Hell is other people.” HD and her friends disagree. They think Meg Wheatly got it right when she said “We are bundles of potential that flourish only in community.” In “Watching the Fire Catch” the philosophy of living with other people widens (or expands?) for HD and the residents of the island they inhabit, to include doing one’s best and leaving the creations of nature intact. Conflicts, kerfuffles, bliss, beauty, grief, loss, and often the doldrums are threads that weave through this story of a group of people who work and play together, who help each other, and who sometimes walk away. But sometimes they return.
